What Is a Hydraulic Steel Dam?

A hydraulic steel dam is a bottom-hinged or bottom-shaft steel gate driven by hydraulic cylinders or a hydraulic hoist to raise and lower a water-retaining leaf. Hebei Dequn Water Conservancy Machinery Co., Ltd. (河北德群水利机械有限公司) builds these dams for wide, low-head rivers, canals, culverts, irrigation headworks, and landscape water-level control. Span, leaf height, and design water head are taken from the project drawing. There is no single catalog size.

Two types Dequn supplies

One type is a bottom-hinged steel flap gate. A hydraulic cylinder pushes the leaf up from the sill and lowers it to retain water. This layout is used on culverts, outlets, and river sections where the leaf pivots about a bottom hinge.

The other type is a bottom-shaft landscape steel dam. A hydraulic hoist turns the shaft so the leaf can hold a set upstream level. Some landscape orders include a waterfall effect at the designed opening angle. Dam width, leaf height, seal, and the hydraulic power unit are matched to the drawing.

What to send for a quotation

ItemWhat the order must state
Dam typeBottom-hinged flap gate, or bottom-shaft landscape dam
Clear width and leaf heightFrom the civil drawing, including hinge or shaft elevation
Design water headUpstream and downstream levels, one-way or two-way
Steel gradeAs specified on the order. Dequn steel water-control work commonly uses Q235B or Q355B when the drawing names those grades
SealRubber side and bottom seals, or the sealing system shown on the drawing
DriveHydraulic cylinder or hydraulic hoist, plus power-unit requirements
DutyIrrigation, flood retention, urban landscape, or culvert outlet

Raise and lower time is set by the cylinder stroke, pump flow, and the power-unit datasheet for that order. Dequn does not publish one fixed opening time for every dam.

Where it is used

Hydraulic steel dams suit wide, low-head channels where a fixed-height weir would hold too much water in flood and too little in the dry season. The leaf lies down or opens to pass flood flow, then rises again to restore the design water level. Culvert flap gates use the same bottom-hinged idea on a shorter span.

FAQ

What is a hydraulic steel dam used for?

A hydraulic steel dam holds or releases water on wide, low-head rivers, canals, culverts, irrigation headworks, and landscape channels. The leaf rises to keep a design water level and lowers to pass flood flow.

What is the difference between a bottom-hinged flap gate and a bottom-shaft steel dam?

A bottom-hinged flap gate pivots on a bottom hinge and is pushed by a hydraulic cylinder. It is the usual layout for culverts and shorter outlets. A bottom-shaft landscape dam turns the leaf with a hydraulic hoist and is used where the river width and a set upstream level are the design point. Some landscape orders add a waterfall effect at the designed opening angle.

What dimensions are required to quote a hydraulic steel dam?

Send the dam type, clear width, leaf height, upstream and downstream levels, one-way or two-way head, seal type, and the hydraulic cylinder or hoist requirements. Dequn quotes from those drawings. There is no single catalog span or fixed price.

How fast does a hydraulic steel dam open?

Opening time is set by the cylinder stroke, pump flow, and the power-unit datasheet for that order. Dequn does not use one opening time for every dam.
