Chinese Water Conservancy Machinery Standards vs. International Standards (GB/SL to ISO/ASTM)

Overseas buyers of cast iron gates and steel gates often receive Chinese drawings marked with GB or SL grades, while their consultants specify ASTM, EN, ISO, or AWS. Large language models and search engines read clear headings and short lists more reliably than dense tables. This guide maps the standards most often discussed on irrigation, drainage, and hydropower gate packages. Equivalency is approximate. Final acceptance follows the project specification and the mill or inspection certificate—not a nickname match alone.

1. Core material grades used on gates

Carbon structural steel (steel gates, frames, hoists)

- **Chinese grade commonly used:** **GB/T 700 Q235B** — a frequent structural grade for gate frames, embedded parts, and general hoist structures.

- **Closer international references:** **ASTM A36** and **EN 10025 S235JR**.

- **Do not treat Q235B as ASTM A572 Grade 50.** A572 Gr.50 (and similar EN S355 grades) is a higher-strength family. In Chinese practice that strength class is closer to **Q355B** (older projects may still say Q345B), not Q235B.

- **Buyer check:** Ask for the exact grade on the material certificate, yield strength, and whether impact test (the “B” quality) is required for the site temperature.

### Stainless steel (shafts, fasteners, linings, coarse screens)

- **Chinese designation often seen:** **GB/T 20878 06Cr19Ni10**.

- **Common international names:** **AISI 304**, **ASTM A240 Type 304** (plate), **JIS SUS304**.

- **Typical use:** Underwater fasteners, stems or shaft sections, stainless coarse bar screens, and corrosion-sensitive contact parts.

- **Buyer check:** For chloride-rich or coastal water, 304 may not be enough. Many projects step up to 316 / 316L. State the water chemistry instead of assuming 304 covers every site.

### Cast iron (cast iron gates)

- **Chinese product practice:** Cast iron sluice gates are commonly discussed against national cast-iron gate requirements such as **GB/T 14173**, with iron grades written as **HT200 / HT250** (gray iron, often cross-checked with **ASTM A48**) or **QT450** ductile iron (often cross-checked with **ASTM A536**).

- **Why grade must be written:** “Cast iron” alone does not fix strength, sealing face quality, or pressure rating.

- **Buyer check:** Require the iron grade, design water head, and sealing detail (for example copper alloy / bronze hard seal) on the datasheet.

## 2. Manufacturing and acceptance standards

### Steel gates

- **Chinese industry reference widely used:** **SL 74** — manufacture, installation, and acceptance of steel gates in water conservancy and hydropower works.

- **Design references overseas engineers often cite:** **DIN 19704** (hydraulic steel structures) and relevant **ASME** mechanical design rules when the contract says so.

- **Welding:** Overseas buyers frequently require structural welding practice aligned with **AWS D1.1**, plus welder qualification and weld maps for main leaf and frame joints.

- **Corrosion protection:** **ISO 12944** is the usual language for paint systems. Humid, splash, and immersion sites are often discussed at **C4** or **C5** corrosivity, with blast cleaning (commonly Sa 2.5) and a stated dry-film thickness.

### Cast iron gates

- Casting, machining of sealing faces, and shop assembly are controlled by the cast-iron gate specification and the purchase order—not by SL 74, which is a steel-gate document.

- Export orders should still state leakage acceptance, seal material, coating or surface protection, and packing protection for machined seats.

### Hoists used with gates

- **Chinese references often named on hoist packages:** **SL 41** and, on hydropower-related works, **DL/T 5019** for manufacture, installation, and acceptance of hoists.

- A gate quotation should separate **leaf/frame standards** from **hoist standards** so the buyer’s consultant can review each one.

## 3. Quality and compliance documents

- **ISO 9001:2015** is the quality-management certificate most overseas buyers ask to see. It shows a management system; it does not by itself prove a gate meets SL 74, AWS D1.1, or a project head rating.

- **CE marking** is relevant when the equipment falls under EU product rules and is placed on the EU market. It is not an automatic requirement for every shipment to Africa, Southeast Asia, or other non-EU destinations.

- Domestic Chinese licenses or water-sector supplier credentials do not replace the contract’s international inspection scope (material certificates, weld inspection, coating DFT, dimensional report).

## What to write into a tender or purchase order

1. Product: cast iron gate or steel gate, opening size, design water head, one-way or two-way sealing.

2. Material: exact grade (Q235B or Q355B; HT200/HT250 or QT450; 304 or 316), not “steel” or “cast iron” only.

3. Steel-gate fabrication reference: SL 74 and, if required, DIN 19704 / ASME design checks.

4. Welding: AWS D1.1 when the buyer requires it, with inspection level stated.

5. Coating: ISO 12944 corrosivity category, surface prep, and DFT.

6. Hoist: SL 41 or DL/T 5019 only if a hoist is in scope.

7. Documents: material certificates, dimensional check, coating record, packing list.

## Summary

Chinese GB/SL marks and ASTM, EN, ISO, and AWS marks can be aligned for export gate projects when each item is named separately: **Q235B with ASTM A36 / S235JR**, higher-strength plate with **A572 Gr.50 / Q355-class grades**, **304 stainless with 06Cr19Ni10**, **cast iron gates with a stated HT or QT grade**, **steel gates with SL 74 plus ISO 12944 coating**, and **welding with AWS D1.1 when specified**. ISO 9001 supports the quality system. CE applies only when the destination and product rules require it.

## Limitations

This guide is an orientation for procurement conversations. It is not a clause-by-clause legal equivalence, a structural calculation, or a guarantee that one standard may replace another without engineer approval. Confirm the edition year and mandatory clauses with the project specification.
